New Years is a time for change, and as such, I Am The Heat will be changing. We’ve parted ways with our beloved bassist, Kevin, and now we’re looking for some new blood.

WHO WE ARE:

Sixties garage rock fury meets post-punk minimalism, with an explosive, almost chaotic live show. Think: early Who meets Stooges meets Strokes meets Les Savy Fav…at a pool party.

RESUME:

Two amazing videos:
Flash or Confess
Ghost Bear
More

A bunch of great recordings, some with all-star producer Eric “Roscoe” Ambel.

Song placement on the CBS TV show CSI.

Strong web presance:
Facebook
Twitter
Website
YouTube
MySpace
Blog

Good press.

Shows roughly once per month, mostly in NY and NJ, but looking to expand a little.

REQUIREMENTS:

Learn existing material quickly, write new material with us, practice twice per week, play shows, record, be awesome. Backing vocals a plus. Owning transportation also a plus, especially if your transportation is a fleet of helicopters. We’ve always wanted to arrive at a show in separate helicopters like Dethklok, or Thom Yorke.

Get in touch if you’re interested, and we’ll talk details and give you our full sales pitch!

We realize this post is long overdue, but what can we say? The last few months have been busy ones for I Am The Heat. And the next few months look about the same. All great stuff of course…

As many of you know we recorded some new songs with all-star producer Eric “Roscoe” Amble. The songs sound AMAZING, and can be streamed on our website, Facebook page, MySpace page, Last.fm page, SoundCloud page…ok, you get the idea.

Starting this week, the songs will also be available on our latest promo CD, which in an obvious throwback to the days of summer camps and mixed tapes, we’ve somewhat jokingly decided to call “Summer 2010″. The CD will be available at all upcoming shows.

Here’s the cover, designed by the fabulously talented Anthony Dines:

We’d like to thank Roscoe, Tim and Mario at Cowboy Technical Services for putting together an amazing 2-day session! We’d also like to thank Mark (hope that’s his name) at Main Drag for the rush job fixing Jameson’s guitar, which mysteriously broke on the way to the studio on day 1. (We still don’t understand how that happened.)

Finally, we’d like to thank our friends and family for their continued support and encouragement. Jameson would like to extend a special thank you to his patient wife for putting up with repeated, late-night rehearsals of the new material. Christina, you are a saint.

The tracks will soon be available for download on iTunes as well. We’re working on setting that up. Sit tight.

In other news, we’re working on another music video, directed once again by camera genius Steven Spencer. Stay tuned for details!

New Review Posted!

New review posted for a show we played last month. We’re pretty psyched! Check it out:

I Am The Heat not only were the heat, but brang it. I instantly fell in love with the singers’ voice. I began to imagine picnics with the voice, what the voice and my babies would look like, etc. The music was very energetic and reminded me of Wolf Parade. These guys were so much fun and their set was one of the highlights of the night. Once I Am The Heat came on I noticed that there were projections all over the room of characters from Alice in Wonderland, I saw my friend Norm Francoer and he told me he was responsible. As the night wore on my notes became jumbled from exhaustion, thanks the day job or inebriation thanks bartender Scott Anderson. So I will tell you that as of 11:45 on Thursday I Am The Heat were WONDERFULL, very psychedelica, super MOD, Incense and Peppermint meets the Hold Steady. Does that make sense? Synthesized syncopathic Mania and this Jam referenced Adderall.”

So sorry that we haven’t been in touch lately. Things have been a little…chaotic lately…In a good way! Needless to say we will have TONS of great stuff to tell you all soon enough. For more up-to-the-minute I am the Heat news, check us out of Facebook.

We had a “strategy meeting” this weekend. Seems so businessy. There’s a lot going on in I am the Heat land these days. Details to come!

ASCAP Screwed Us Out Of A Show (updated)

Posted on Thursday, July 9th, 2009 at 10:33 am
Filed under News, Shows

We joined ASCAP a few months ago when we got a small CSI licensing deal. Months go by with no word from them and now, a few days before we’re supposed to play a show, we get a call from [let's call them the promoter for simplicity's sake] saying the venue wants us off the bill. Why? Because ASCAP called and threatened the venue for not having an ASCAP license.

Here’s how I understand it. According to federal law all commercial establishments (venues, bars, clubs, etc) need to pay to use copyrighted material. Ok, I agree with this in principle. So how does I am the Heat factor into this? WE DON’T. After spending half a day trying to get in touch with someone in the ASCAP licensing department (615-742-5000, ask for the “licensing department”), I was informed that in NO WAY does I am the Heat playing a non-ASCAP-licensed venue amount to ANY risk on the venue’s part. This is because we play original material, to which we own the rights.

When asked if there was any way we could still play the show, ASCAP answered that WE could pay the licensing fee instead of the venue. Beyond being incredibly fucked up, this also made no sense…unless they meant that WE’D have to pay a fee to ASCAP to allow the VENUE to play ASCAP music, which (again) has nothing to do with I am the Heat playing the show.

So why were we kicked off the bill? My best guess is that ASCAP saw that one of their artists was playing the show and tried to use that to leverage the venue into paying their annual fee. It would appear that ASCAP is misleading the venue and using it’s members (us) to sell their product. LAME.

So how has ASCAP helped us, the struggling artist? THEY HAVEN’T (so far). Worse yet, they cost us a show we were very excited about. Thank you, ASCAP.

UPDATE (7/10/09): I spoke with a friend of a friend at ASCAP who cleared things up a bit. He confirmed some of my suspicions about our ASCAP membership playing no role in this. Neither the venue nor I am the Heat need as ASCAP license in order to have us perform our songs. It is still unclear whether or not this was all a coincidence. I never heard back from the venue so I don’t know exactly what transpired between ASCAP and the venue owner.
